Today while looking for a copy of "The Writer's Workshop" for GEOS, I ran across this interesting chat from 1994 with the author of several popular GEOS conversion programs, Joe Buckley. Back in 1994, the online service GEnie held a regular real time chat called the "Commodore 64/128 Round Table". This particular episode is with the author of the GEOS apps, "Wrong is Write" and "Graphics Storm", Joe Buckley. |

This document tries to explain the “why”, “what” and “how” details of interrupt handling in Commodore 8-bit computers. It specifically describes the behaviour of the VIC-20 and C64, other systems may have differences to what is described here. In contrast to many other computers of the era Commodore designed a flexible hardware and software system that allowed new peripherals to be created and applications to interface with them. |

This document tries to explain the “why”, “what” and “how” details of input/output handling by Commodore 8-bit computers from the VIC-20 onwards. The specifics mentioned apply to the VIC-20, it is possible they vary slightly with other models. In contrast to many other systems of the era Commodore designed a flexible and versatile interface to allow programmers to interact with peripherals and to enable new hardware devices to be integrated without major changes to applications. BASIC programs can access printers, disk drives and other devices using high-level concepts with a set of simple commands. Machine code programs also have a well-defined and documented set of KERNAL routines which perform the equivalent functions |

This document tries to explain the “why”, “what” and “how” details of the tape format used by all 8-bit Commodore computers. The specifics mentioned below certainly apply to tapes written by the VIC-20, it is possible (or even likely) that other models have subtle differences to what is described here. There are several “layers” to discuss, for clarity each will be introduced in turn to, ultimately, build up a complete picture. At times there are topics which are related but not essential to the main subject. These will be prefixed with “Diversion”, they can be skipped if preferred. Only the standard Commodore structure and encoding will be discussed, formats used by fastloaders vary and I have not studied them. |
