Ocean Ranger on the Commodore 64 is a modern naval combat sim/wargame where you command the high-tech hydrofoil frigate Ocean Ranger through a series of single-ship missions across four hot spots like the Bering Sea, Central America, Southeast Asia, and the Persian Gulf. You start each mission by reading a slide-style briefing and loading out your ship within weight limits, choosing fuel and weapons such as a 76mm deck gun, Sea Sparrow anti-air missiles, Harpoon anti-ship missiles, and depth charges. In first-person view from the bridge, you pilot at up to 55 knots while tracking and engaging surface ships, submarines, aircraft, and mines using radar, maps, night vision and other displays on configurable mini-monitors, plus defensive chaff and electronic countermeasures. It’s not a hardcore sim like Harpoon, but mixes reasonably realistic systems and damage control with fast, arcade-flavored action and a career mode that tracks your promotions and medals.
