Eye of the Beholder wasn’t actually released commercially for the Commodore 64—only for MS-DOS, Amiga, SNES, Sega CD, and a few others—but there is a modern fan-made C64/C128 conversion of the DOS original. In the game itself you control a party of adventurers hired by the lords of Waterdeep to investigate an evil presence beneath the city; once you enter the sewers, the way back collapses, forcing you ever deeper through dwarven tunnels and drow-infested caverns toward the lair of Xanathar, the beholder behind the threat. Played as a first-person, real-time dungeon crawler using AD&D 2nd Edition rules, you move tile by tile, manage a four- to six-character party, fight monsters, map twisting mazes, and solve environmental puzzles as you descend floor by floor toward the final confrontation in classic “Dungeon Master–style” fashion.
