Defender of the Crown on the Commodore 64 is a turn-based medieval strategy game with action mini-games, set in a romanticized England after the king’s death, where you play a Saxon lord trying to drive out Norman rivals and unite the country. You raise armies and move them on a map of English territories, besieging castles and managing taxes, but you also personally ride into events like jousting tournaments, side-scrolling castle raids to steal gold, and simple sword-fighting duels. Choosing one of several lords with different strengths in leadership, jousting, and swordplay, you balance conquest with occasional help from Robin Hood while admiring the then-stunning cinematic visuals that made the game famous.
