Dragonworld on the Commodore 64 is a graphic text adventure from Telarium, based on the fantasy novel by Byron Preiss and Michael Reaves, where you play Amsel of Fandora on a quest to reach your friend Hawkwind of Simbala and together rescue the world’s Last Dragon from kidnappers. The game presents locations with detailed still images above a block of descriptive prose, while you type natural-language commands into a parser to move between areas, manipulate objects, and talk with characters as new regions of the world gradually open up. It emphasizes atmosphere and story over brutal puzzling, starting relatively gently before its challenges ramp up later on, and was noted at the time for its rich writing, numerous illustrative graphics, and overall “computer fantasy novel” feel.
