There are two groups of people who use computers. The first group already knows a lot about computers. The second group lacks previous experience with computers. Commodore designed the Amiga for both types of computer users. Most computer manuals aren't written with the absolute beginner in mind. That's where this book comes in. Here you'll find ideas, tips, suggestions and more to help you learn about your Amiga. There are three types of Amigas. The original model, the Amiga 1000, is no longer manufactured by Commodore Amiga. The Amiga 500 is a self-contained unit, with a disk drive, central processing unit and keyboard built into one case. The largest model, the Amiga 2000, has similarities to both the Amiga 500 and Amiga 1000, except that the 2000 can be made compatible with the IBM PC. The Amiga for Beginners was written specifically for Amiga 500 and Amiga 1000 owners. With this book are programming examples as well as instructions for connecting and operating the Amiga. Programming isn't just for programmers. This book shows you the basics of simple programming for your Amiga. The Amiga for Beginners helps you understand all you need to know as an Amiga owner, and hopefully entertain you as you learn. |

Editor's note: We have updated this book to include Workbench 1.3 and Workbench 2.0. The Amiga Workbench is an ever expanding and improving system. Programs are changed and added to the Workbench to upgrade and improve the Amiga operating system. Therefore the programs listed in this book may not appear in the drawers or diskettes listed. If a program does not appear in the drawer mentioned, try looking in other drawers on the Workbench and Extras diskettes for the program. We will note the differences between Workbench 1.3 and 2.0 whenever possible. |

Anyway | hope you enjoy, the book is totally free and done simply because | am enjoying putting it together and had failed to find any book out there that focussed on the gaming side of the Amiga. |

The aim of this book is two-fold. We want to inform you about some of the best com mercial games available for the Amiga but more importantly, we want to help you get the most out of them too. That's why, over the following pages, we'll be taking a look at some of the classic games that have been published for the Amiga over the last few years and offering comprehensive hints and tips for them all. These represent, in our opinion, the creme de la creme of Amiga games. You probably won't agree with every choice we've made, but a goodly proportion will undoubtecily feature in your collection nonetheless. |

Think back to the first time you sat down at your Amiga. You probably experienced the following reactions: excitement, astonish ment, surprise and confusion—probably in that order. Yes, the Amiga really is a super personal computer. But there's so much you can do with an Amiga that you often don't know where to begin. How should you begin to apply the Amiga to your tastes? How do you make the most of the Amiga's many capabilities? If you are new to the Amiga, you probably have dozens of questions by now. To start you off, Chapter Two of this book describes work with the Command Line Interface (CLI). Part of this book explains methods and programming techniques for getting the most out of Microsoft's AmigaB ASIC, with special emphasis on using existing system modules from the software supplied with your Amiga. You'll find handy AmigaBASIC program routines in this book that let you use the various fonts and type styles, use rubberbanding, create borderless windows, and even a disk monitor for exploring the machine language code of the disk drive. Chapter Five describes the handling of AmigaDOS. It shows how to use the commands in the CLI, and how these commands can be useful to you. Other subjects covered in Amiga Tricks and Tips include the handling and changing of the Workbench. This includes manipulation and editing of icons for your own purposes. |

Compute!’s Beginner’s Guide to the Amiga by Dan McNeill, published by Compute! Publications in 1986, is an approachable start-to-finish orientation for people new to the Amiga or upgrading from another computer. It begins with setup and basic operation—keyboard, mouse, menus—then expands into a practical tour of what the machine can do, including overviews of productivity tools like word processors, spreadsheets, databases, plus graphics, music, and games. The emphasis is on confidence and smart early choices: learn the essentials, understand the platform’s strengths, and avoid wasting money on software that doesn’t fit your needs. |

Compute!’s Inside Amiga Graphics (Sheldon Leemon, 1986, Compute! Publications) is an in-depth guide to what makes the Amiga’s visuals special, explaining the custom chips, bitplanes, screen modes, sprites, and animation techniques in a way that’s directly useful to coders. Aimed at programmers rather than casual users, it shows how to set up displays, manipulate graphics in memory, use features like hardware scrolling and overlays, and generally squeeze impressive graphics performance out of modest hardware, making it a classic “under the hood” book for anyone who wants to do more than just admire Amiga graphics on screen. |

Compute!’s Kids and the Amiga by Edward H. Carlson (published by Compute! Publications in 1986) aims to make the Amiga approachable for younger or beginner users by teaching Amiga BASIC with short explanations and easy-to-follow programs that build foundational skills. Rather than diving deep into theory, it focuses on hands-on learning—using core commands, working with text and simple graphics, and gradually introducing more structured programming habits—so readers can quickly see results on screen and gain confidence. |

Compute!’s Second Book of Amiga (Compute! Publications, 1988) is an anthology-style companion to the magazine, gathering a range of Amiga programs and articles—most notably things like the strategy game Laser Chess and other graphics- and sound-heavy pieces—that readers can type in, run, and dissect. Aimed at users who already know the basics, it focuses less on step-by-step beginner instruction and more on showcasing what the machine can do through complete examples: games, tools, and demonstrations with accompanying explanations. By studying and tweaking these listings, readers learn practical programming techniques, data structures, and hardware tricks specific to the Amiga’s custom chips, making the book both a fun software grab bag and a hands-on learning resource. |

Chaos theory has found applications in areas as diverse as population dynamics, computer graphics and weather forecasting. The related topic of fractals gives rise to computer-generated pictures of exquisite depth and beauty, resembling landscapes, trees and flowers. Now, anybody with access to the power of an Amiga computer can explore this new field. Conrad Bessant explains the necessary mathematics in the simplest manner, with complete BASIC (Amiga, Hisoft and GFA)listings, ready to use on any Amiga, but readily adaptable to other computers. Connect Your Amiga! by Dale L. Larson (Intangible Assets Manufacturing, 1996) is a from-the-ground-up networking and online guide that explains what the Internet is, why it’s useful, and how to hook an Amiga into it using modems, terminal programs, and LAN hardware. Across its 256 pages it walks through choosing and configuring modems, finding and using BBSs and commercial online services, downloading and unpacking software, and then moves into “serious” networking topics like SANA-II drivers, Ethernet and ARCnet adapters, serial/parallel links, and configuring TCP/IP stacks (including SLIP/PPP) plus Envoy, DECnet, and connections to PCs, Macs, and Unix systems. The tone balances novice-friendly background with lots of concrete tips and configuration advice, aiming to turn a standalone Amiga into a well-connected network and Internet node. |

Best Amiga Tips and Secrets by Denny Atkin is essentially a distilled “power user” handbook that pulls together years of magazine-style wisdom into one place: it covers Workbench customization, AmigaDOS tricks, file and disk management, getting extra mileage out of RAM and storage, speeding up common tasks, and solving annoying problems with printers, modems, games, and utilities. Aimed at non-programmers as well as enthusiasts, it focuses on concrete, do-this-now tweaks and troubleshooting steps rather than theory, helping an Amiga owner turn a stock setup into a smoother, faster, and more personalized machine while avoiding many of the pitfalls that used to trip up new and intermediate users. |

First Steps: Amiga Surfin’ by Karl Jeacle (Bookmark Publishing, 1996) is a beginner’s guide to getting an Amiga onto the Internet, walking a new user through the whole process from choosing a modem and ISP, to installing and configuring AmiTCP and PPP, and then actually using the net with email, Usenet, and web browsers. Written specifically with Amiga owners in mind, it explains the basic concepts of being online in the mid-90s (netiquette, FAQs, file transfers, online software sources) while staying very practical and step-by-step, so that someone with a fairly stock Amiga can turn it into a fully functional Internet machine without needing deep networking knowledge. |

Kids and the Amiga, Second Edition updates Compute!’s Kids and the Amiga for the early-90s Amiga scene while keeping the same core mission: make programming on the Amiga feel fun, doable, and non-intimidating for younger users. It walks through the essentials of Amiga BASIC—variables, input/output, loops, decisions, and simple text and graphics—using bite-sized explanations followed by type-in programs that show something immediately on screen, so readers can experiment, tweak values, and see what happens. The tone stays gentle and conversational, assuming no prior coding experience, and the emphasis is on building confidence and curiosity: learning enough BASIC to create simple games and utilities, while quietly laying the foundation for more serious Amiga or general programming later on. |

Making Music on the Amiga (1990) treats the Amiga as a serious home-studio machine and walks the reader from fundamentals into practical production: it starts with basic musical concepts, then explains how the Amiga’s audio hardware works, how to use samplers and public-domain music programs (included on the accompanying disk) written in AmigaBASIC, C, GFA BASIC, and assembly, and how to build songs using trackers and sequencers, with sections on MIDI gear and syncing the computer to external keyboards and drum machines. The tone is very tutorial-focused—step-by-step projects rather than pure theory—so by the end a musician with modest technical background can sample sounds, arrange multi-track pieces, and treat the Amiga as the heart of a late-80s/early-90s style digital studio. |
