Dan Dare III: The Escape on the Commodore 64 is a sci-fi run-and-gun platformer where Dan is trapped on the Mekon’s organic, living spaceship and must blast his way through its grotesque internal decks to reach an escape ship before the craft reaches Earth. Each level is a horizontally scrolling maze of platforms, ladders, and pulsating “flesh” walls, filled with Treen troops, mutant creatures, and biological hazards that constantly respawn from growth pods, forcing you to keep moving while managing ammo and limited energy. You collect weapon upgrades, keys, and explosives to open new areas or destroy growth nodes, gradually unlocking access to lift shafts and deeper sections of the ship. Compared to the more puzzle-y earlier games, Dan Dare III leans harder into straightforward, fast-paced shooting wrapped in a weird, bio-mechanical comic-book setting.
