Save New York on the Commodore 64 is a single-screen shoot-’em-up where one or two players pilot tiny jet fighters over a row of Manhattan skyscrapers, defending them from descending alien creatures. As the bat- or spider-like invaders drift down, they latch onto buildings and literally eat chunks out of them until the structures collapse, so you zip back and forth blasting them before too much damage is done, occasionally snagging falling fuel canisters to keep your plane flying. Some aliens lay eggs that hatch into small monsters which head into the subway tunnels below to chew away at the city’s foundations, forcing you to land your plane, send your little pilot into the underground, and gun them down on foot to stop a catastrophic cave-in. The result is a frantic mix of airborne shooting and risky trips into the subway, with bonus points awarded for every intact apartment that survives each escalating wave.
