Commando on the Commodore 64 is a vertically scrolling run-and-gun shooter where you control “Super Joe,” a lone soldier dropped behind enemy lines and armed with a machine gun and grenades as he fights through waves of enemy troops toward fortified strongholds. You run upscreen through trenches, bridges, and bunkers, blasting soldiers, tossing grenades over obstacles, and trying to free prisoners of war while avoiding streams of bullets and thrown explosives. The C64 port cuts the arcade’s longer campaign down to just a few short but very intense stages, but it’s famous for its fast action and especially for Rob Hubbard’s extended SID soundtrack, which turns a simple, straightforward military shooter into one of the system’s most iconic arcade conversions.
