zip1 Compute!'s Gazette 1988 GEOS Programming Contest Winners

Bruce Thomas has come up with yet another excellent collection of GEOS programs!  The following is quoted from the text file included in the archive:

1988 GEOS Programming Contest

With a shout-out in the Editorial column and a double-page ad, The GEOS Programming Contest, sponsored by Berkeley Softworks (BSW) and COMPUTE!'s Gazette, sprang to life in the April 1988 COMPUTE!'s Gazette magazine. The contest promised "Over $25,000 in cash and prizes!"

There were four categories; Entertainment, Education, Productivity, and Open Programming, with three prizes under each sub-category of Application or Desk Accessory. The contest deadline for entries was August 31, 1988 and that may have been a bridge too far for many programmers as only 17 of the available 24 prizes were awarded when the winners were announced in the December 1988 Gazette.

While the rules, as printed in April, stated that entries would become the property of BSW, it was made clear that BSW, the Gazette, and Quantum Computer Services may distribute the entries as part of a "shareware" library. To that end, entrants were told to include "in" the program, "their name, address and a "user fee" amount for satisfied users to send a discretionary payment."

When the winners were announced it was noted that BSW "will put the cream of the crop onto a special shareware disk."

I've never seen such a disk.

I imagine most of the winning entries ended up on Q-Link but I was never on Q-Link. I got some of these from geoWorld and other members of our local User Group.

The only program I haven't been able to locate is Bingo by Robert Rosenbaum.

Otherwise, the rest, or newer versions, appear on this compilation disk. Where there were documentation files I've included those. Cluster Wars has Instructions built into the game but I always found I had trouble remembering the values of ships and other details so I grabbed all the scenario and instruction screens with geoWizDump and made a couple geoPaint files in order to print out the instructions. I've included those files on here as well.

zip3 Dick Estel's Best GEOS Utilities

Dick Estel's Best GEOS Utilities (some updated versions plus a few extras.)

Dick Estel lives in California and has been a member of the Fresno Commodore User Group since 1988. Dick used GEOS to produce a newsletter for the club and was an avid collector of GEOS fonts, which he started cataloging in June 1989. To help cover his costs he decided to offer his Font Catalog for sale. Over time the product morphed into the Font Resource Directory which grew to over 500 pages. He produced the Fontastic Newsletter and also wrote for a few small publications such as the geoMetrix geoJournal.

Dick began offering his GEOS Font collection on disks and then started offering scanned graphics (Handyscanner), Calendar disks, other graphics, and five double-sided GEOS Utility disks.

Most of this material is available on the geoSpecific CD which can be found on Glenn Holmer's website (lyonlabs.org/commodore/onrequest/geos).

One disk that is not on the CD is this one - Dick's Best GEOS Utilities. On here you will find a distilled collection from the five Utility Disks previously mentioned.

zip4 geoNEWS Issue 13 - Supplement Disk by Digi-Clips

geoNEWS Issue 13 (September 1992) - Supplement Disk by Digi-Clips.

This is a double sided disk with some really great Clipart on Side B as you can see from the screen shots, but side A contains a super cool feature you can add to your GEOS startup that will play .RAW sound clips during boot-up of GEOS.  There are many sample clips to choose from along with the AutoRAW GEOS program to play the sounds.  In addition to that, there is also two versions of DigiPlayer that you can use to check out .RAW files without needing to boot into GEOS.  But that's not all, there is also a program called "RawToGEOS" included that lets you convert your own sound clips into .RAW files.  Complete documentation is included for the various programs on the disk.

Big thanks to Bruce Thomas for sharing this unique GEOS treasure.

zip7 GEOS Genie Column Collection

Bruce Thomas has found another amazing collection of GEOS programs consisting of three .D81 disk images of software that Jane M. Voskamp-Jones wrote about in her GEOS Genie column in various publications.  The following is quoted from Bruce:

Jane M. Voskamp-Jones was one of the biggest advocates of GEOS on Commodore 8-bit computers. In nearly 20 years she did an excellent job reviewing GEOS software and recommending programs that improved the functionality of the operating system.

GenieDisk1.D81 contains the PD GEOS Software that Jane reviewed in her GEOS Genie column in the Australian Commodore Network magazine from July 1994 to January 1996.

GenieDisk2.D81 contains the PD GEOS Software that Jane reviewed in her GEOS Genie column in the Australian Commodore Network magazine from February 1996 to May 1996 plus The Australian GEOS Genie columns that were published in the geoNEWS newsletter of the British geoClub from June 1998 to December 1998.

GenieDisk3.D81 contains the PD GEOS Software that Jane reviewed in her GEOS Genie column in the Commodore Mailink, newsletter of the Meeting 64/128 Users Through The Mail user group, from May 2006 to October 2012.

The software on this three disk set represents only a small portion of the GEOS writing that Jane did, but they are all that I can locate at the moment. Each disk has a geoWrite and a geoCalc file listing the publications, issues, plus reviewed software. A geoList file also itemizes the files on each disk.

All of the above publications can be found on the Bombjack site. Some of the newsletters of other groups do not appear to be archived anywhere.

Jane passed away in 2018.

In the ReadMeetJane file on each disk I let Jane introduce herself via Introductory columns she wrote for the geoNEWS in 1993 and Mailink in 2006.

zip8 geoSpecific GEOS PD/Shareware Collection V1.6 NEW

The geoSpecific PD/Shareware Collection V1.6 was created in 2004 and originally sold on CD.

In 2014, at the request of Glenn Holmer, the Collection became available for download on the lyonlabs.org web site where it resided until November 2025.

Holmer, owner of the lyonlabs web site, said about the geoSpecific CD “This is the ultimate GEOS collection”.

The zip file here is about 46 MB in size. It should extract to about 86 MB in size and doesn't have to be put on a CD.

There are over 270 disk images in the Collection and over 700 PDF pages of information (most in the Dick Estel Font Resource Directory folder).

You will find lots of wonderful software here which will surely increase your enGEOyment of using GEOS.

zip14 Steve Vander Ark Gazette Geos Compilation

Bruce Thomas sent over this amazing collection of GEOS programs compiled on two .d81 disk images.  This information accompanied the disk images:

In his January 1994 GEOS Column in COMPUTE!'s Gazette Disk Magazine, Steve Vander Ark wrote that his editor requested that he "put together a disk of the best GEOS shareware" that he had mentioned in his column over the previous two years.

The rest of that column was spent detailing Steve's search for those files after a thunderstorm wiped out his RAMLink contents. To the best of my knowledge Steve never did create that compilation disk before the Gazette shut down with the February 1995 issue.

So, here are two .D81 images containing the GEOS software Steve had written about. Each disk has a ReadMe geoWrite file with some more detail than this note, a geoCalc file listing the software that was discussed each month and where to find it if it isn't on these disks, and a geoList file cataloging the disk.
